Dr. Akbarnia Transitions to Research

In this November 2013 letter, SDCSD Founder Behrooz A. Akbarnia, MD, talks about his decision to transition to full-time research and eduction.

Dr. Akbarnia will end his clinical practice on January 1, 2014. From that date, Dr. Ramin Bagheri, and Dr. Gregory M. Mundis, Jr. will assume the ongoing care of Dr. Akbarnia's patients. Dr. Akbarnia will continue as President of the San Diego Spine Foundation, and with his role with the Growing Spine Foundation.

This is not retirement. Dr. Akbarnia will be directing his passion and energy towards research, education, and the continued improvement of spinal care.

Dr. Akbarnia Featured in Beckers Spine Review Interviw

In this September 30, 2013 interview, Beckers writer Heather Linder interviewed SDCSD Founder Behrooz A. Akbarnia, MD, about the next steps in Scoliosis Surgery. Dr. Akbarnia discusses both the past and future of scoliosis treatment in this detailed and important interview.

In addition to founding the San Diego Center for Spinal Disorders, he is a clinical professor in the department of orthopedic surgery at the University of California San Diego. He is a past president of the Scoliosis Research Society and the founder of Growing Spine Foundation, an organization that supports research and educational activities in the field of pediatric spine.

On May 25-26th, Dr Akbarnia was the presidential guest speaker at KSSS in Daejeon, Korea and gave presentations on Minimally Invasive surgery for adult deformity as well as advances for the treatment of Early Onset Scoliosis.

The San Diego Spine Center for Spinal Disorders is a part of advanced research into the use of magnetically controlled growth rods for the treatment of scoliosis in children.

Dr. Akbarnia Interviewed by Spinal News

In this October 2011 interview, Dr. Akbarnia discussed early results from a multicenter prospective review of the magnetically controlled growing rod. The MAGEC system is implanted by less invasive surgery, and then subsequently lengthened non-invasively by changing the magnetic field through the skin.

Dr. Akbarnia Joins SRS/POSNA Delegation

Dr. Akbarnia participated in the SRS/POSNA Task Force on Pediatric Medical Devices meetings with the FDA on November 14th, 2011. Despite legislative efforts included in the last FDA user fee bill, the Pediatric Medical Device Safety Act has not produced a marked increase in the availability of new devices for pediatric orthopaedic indications. Scoliosis Research Society

Members of the San Diego Center for Spinal Disorders just returned from a very productive meeting of the 45th Annual Meeting of the Scoliosis Research Society held in Kyoto, Japan September 21-24, 2010. Our staff was involved in over a dozen oral presentations or electronic poster exhibits. This hard work was celebrated by our team as shown during one of the social events of the annual meeting.

Dr. Akbarnia devotes more time to Research and Education

Behrooz Akbarnia, M.D. has limited his clinical practice to the treatment of pediatric and adult spinal deformity, allowing him to expand his role as a leading educator and researcher in the field of spinal deformity care. Dr. Akbarnia will continue on as the Medical Director of the San Diego Center for Spinal Disorders.
